Solo Training Day 2022
Published 11:42 on 13 May 2022
The annual Solo Training Day was held on a bright and blustery day at the Club with a constant 15 mph WSW wind gusting to 25 mph in the afternoon. Expert coaching was once again provided by our own Phil Barnes and Luke Shaw who were assisted by Bill Kenyon.
A simple windward/leeward course from AH to E was set for the morning session which focussed on upwind sailing, in particular, body positioning and maximising boat speed. The emphasis was on sail shape, the use of tell tales, leech tension and boom position. The downward legs were used to perfect neutral helm and the correct posture for anticipating gusts/wind shifts and improved on board agility.
The afternoon session was devoted to gybing which unnervingly coincided with an increase in wind speed! After watching some instructional videos, the fleet took to the water using the same course whilst Luke, Philip and Bill gave advice from the ribs. The day was completed by an onshore discussion surrounding the optimum static and dynamic rig set ups for the Solo.
Overall, this was a highly enjoyable, informative and fun dayfor all. Our grateful thanks to Luke, Phil, and Bill who gave up their time and once again provided excellent coaching both on and off the water.
