Northern Travellers Solo Open 2022
Published 20:10 on 9 Oct 2022
The final round of the 2022 Northern Travellers Solo Championship took place at Budworth Sailing Club on 8th October. The event attracted 33 entries including 15 visitors from various clubs around the region. We were also delighted to welcome Patrick Burns, the President of the Solo Class Association, all the way from Dalgety Bay SC in Scotland.
Sailing conditions were perfect with a moderate westerly breeze allowing PRO Mark Antonelli to use the full extent of the mere for long beats, reaches and dead runs. Gusty conditions at times were testing for some members of the fleet resulting in a number of capsizes but thankfully, the sunny conditions maintained a reasonable water temperature!
The first race was won by Alex Alcock of Leigh & Lowton, with Martin Honor of Ogston SC second and Budworth's own Philip Barnes in third place. The second race was won by Salcombe YC's Roger Guess from Martin Honor in second and Ian Hopwood (Nantwich) in third.
Wind conditions abated slightly for the final race of the day which was again taken by Martin Honor, followed by Steve Denison (Yeadon SC) and Philip Barnes in third place.
The overall event was won by Martin Honor, with Roger Guess taking second spot and Alex Alcock in third. The prize for leading lady was taken by Hannah Robinson of Blackpool & Fleetwood SC, narrowly beating Justine Davenport (Burwain SC) and Michelle Tunnicliffe (Bassenthwaite SC).
Our congratulations to all the winners and special thanks to PRO/ARO Mark and Tracy Antonelli, along with rib crews Steve Hayward, Jackie Purves, Mike Martin and James Prestwich. Thanks also to Bill who helped ensure the day was a great success.
