Event report: Budworth Beacons at "The Lash"

Published 22:00 on 25 Mar 2023

Last weekend, the Budworth team racing group sent a team to the famous Liverpool Lash! The event, hosted at West Kirby Sailing Club by Manchester University Sailing Club and Liverpool University Sailing Club saw 18 teams descend upon the marine lake for a weekend of fantastic racing.

Day 1 saw extremely light breeze to start with only a few races able to take place before a postponement was flown. The air on the shore was very relaxed after the night out in Manchester and Budworth settled in with bacon butties for a relaxing morning. This didn't last too long as a sea breeze kicked in and racing began with Budworth scoring 2 wins in their first 2 races, against Durham White and Lancaster Black. Unfortunately this couldn't last as a pair of 1,2,6, victories by the Newcastle teams put us on matched wins and losses, with 3 more to sail. Each team was able to sail 8 races in total. Kudos to the race organisor team for packing them in, despite the conditions not always playing ball with swinging wind direction and occasionally light breeze neccesitating on the water team change-overs. Finishing the day with 5 wins and 3 losses the team were really pleased with how we'd sailed and felt that we'd definititely adhered to the umpire's "number 1 rule" of having fun!

Results from day 1:

Day 2: Budworth Beacons, placing 8th on day 1, had qualified for the silver fleet which meant there was still a shot at qualifying for the finals with the top placed silver fleet boat becoming a "silver surfer". With significantly more breeze than the previous day, the racing was often much closer and with 3 wins and 2 losses, the team were certainly proud of how they did against stiff competion. Congratulations to Durham White, storming home with 5/5 race wins to gain a place in the finals. They were formidable to race against, although we like to think we gave them somehting to think about!

Results from day 2:

The Budworth Beacons Team, for this event was: Bex Smith, Liz Jamie, Alex Cleaver, Marie Smallwood, Chris Smallwood, and Mhairi Gass.
