Budworth Shines at the 24hr race - Four Teams, One Community

Published 18:23 on 23 Sep 2025
What a weekend!
Budworth Sailing Club proudly fielded FOUR teams at this year's legendary 24hr event, each one showcasing grit, determination, and a whole lot of good humour in the face of some extreme conditions. With nearly 50 competitors sailing from the club, plus the support team working hard behind the scenes, we had to find an extension to the marquee to shelter everyone!
From torrential rain and flashes of lightning to wind gusts topping 40mph, our sailors battled the elements with smiles on their faces (most of the time!) and a few memorable wipe-outs that kept the onshore supporters entertained along with the annual Prosecco Party at 5pm on Saturday night for all competitors to enjoy.
Leading the charge, Team A delivered a fantastic result, finishing 3rd overall and were the leading GP14 boat out of a total of 61 boats competing this year. Their consistency on the water and sharp crew changes even when shifting wind directions made handovers tricky proved just how well-drilled they were. Team B also did well to finish 18th and were collectively called The Masters as all the helms were over 40!
A few capsizes from Team C in difficult conditions but some great sailing to finish 39th.
A special mention must go to our Youth Team (Team D), who made history as the first Budworth juniors to enter the 24hr and came in 33rd overall. They sailed with huge determination, showed brilliant endurance, and earned a wave of cheers from everyone watching as they finished.
Alongside them, our other three Budworth teams kept the spirit alive, bringing energy, encouragement, and plenty of laughs throughout the long night.
All in all, it was a true team effort, and every sailor, supporter, and volunteer played their part in making this a 24hr to remember. Congratulations to all!
