Members of Budworth sailing club in Cheshire were thrilled to welcome a very special guest this week.

Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal visited Budworth Sailing Club, near Northwich, as part of its 75th anniversary celebrations.

As President of the RYA (Royal Yachting Association) - the sport's governing body The Princess Royal was able to witness the vibrancy and enthusiasm which earned Budworth the accolade, RYA Club of the Year for 2022.

The Princess Royal was greeted by Budworth's Commodore, Hugh Attfield, and flag officers of the club Bill Kenyon, Paul Clancy and Wendy Martin. Commodore Attfield gave The Princess Royal a tour of the clubhouse and shared stories of its rich 75-year history. The Princess Royal was then introduced to a number of other members who have played key roles in the success of the club.

The Princess Royal watched the start of a junior sailors' race before presenting prizes to the winners as well as certificates to club members who have recently completed their dinghy instructor qualification. Hugh explained that the club's focus on training and development of newcomers to the sport is vital to its continued growth and future success.

Afterwards he said: "It was an honour to welcome The Princess Royal today and show her our fantastic club. She showed a keen interest in every aspect we were able to show her, from our foundation in the 1940s to teaching youngsters how to win races. Budworth is run on an entirely voluntary basis by its members and we are very proud of what we have achieved."
