Snipe sailing in a nutshell.

The Snipe is a 15-1/2 foot, 2 person, one design racing dinghy with a rich history. Designed by William Crosby in 1931, it has evolved into a modern, tactical racing dinghy with fleets around the world. Although the Snipe Class has some of the best competition in the world, the class has not lost sight of the importance of social events and, in fact, many regattas are as well known for their parties as they are for their racing. The essence of the class is summed up by its motto:

Snipes have been sailed at Budworth for decades and proved to be a very popular class for all ages. Key characteristics:

Competitive The Snipe class is strictly controlled to ensure the class remains competitive. Every restriction is based on longevity of the equipment and safety to helm and crew. Although the hull, mast, boom and rudder are strictly controlled, the laying out of the snipe is free. This allows the owner to rig their Snipe the way it works for him or her.

Aluminium centreboard provides stability and allows it to point high upwind.

High Boom Easily tack and gybe without the end of the boom hitting the water and allows less mobile sailors to keep on enjoying sailing. A flexible mast ensures a highly tuneable rig.

Chined hull A chined hull allows it to get on the plane quickly.

Whisker pole The whisker pole is normally set up to automatically retrieve with the help of a launching system and allows a close reach with the jib projected forwards.

Weight The minimum weight is 173kg (381lb). The benefit is that the Snipe is extremely strong and remains competitive for years. It also ensures that the helm and crew weight are not as important.

GRP Most Snipes around the world are GRP and little maintenance is needed to keep it going through the seasons. For a little fee you can leave the Snipe stored at Budworth over winter.

Prices Snipes are available from about £500 for a 30 to 40 year old Snipe (20000+ number) to £11,000 for a new one (31000+ number). Competitive Snipes start at about £2000 for a 20 year old Snipe (26000+ number) and £4000 to £5000 for a 10 year old Snipe (29000+ number).

Popular class The Snipe is one of the most popular 2 man one design dinghy class in the World. Budworth sailing club is the largest Snipe fleet in the UK. At club level the Snipe fleet is well represented and achieves the highest average turnout figures year upon year.

Snipe sailors from Budworth travel all over the UK, and abroad, for serious sailing and serious fun. Why don't you experience it for yourself and join us?
