Driver Trophy – Bank Holiday Monday

Aug 142016

On the Monday August Bank Holiday, the day after Commodore’s Regatta, we have the Driver Trophy event. This is an inter-fleet team racing competition. Don’t worry about it being a team racing competition (in the club Fireflys) – the emphasis is on having a go and having fun. If you would like to sail speak to your fleet captain and ask to join your fleet’s team (and if your fleet isn’t entering a team, well organise a team from your fleet yourself).
A team is 6 people – 3 helms and 3 crew – but if you are short we will get people to jump in a boat to make up numbers (last year I think only two of the teams had a full team). If a team has more than 6 then we will simply rotate people round for each race (and get them to fill in any spare slots in other teams).
Last year we were very well supported by Juniors, so if you are short of crews (take note single handers and windersurfers!) then let Russell Page know and we will find some for you.
Racing starts at 11:00 (help appreciated to rig the Fireflys beforehand) and we will keep racing throughout the day with a series of round robin races till we have had enough (probably about 15:00), when we will have a sail off between the two top teams for the trophy (best of 3 races).
And if you don’t want to sail come down anyway and watch the racing. Team racing is a great spectator sport with the sailing close inshore, the races very short but exciting, and we will have the ribs shadowing the racing for the keen spectators to get really close to the action. And of course the weather will be perfect.
