GP14 Masters & Youth Championships

Held over the weekend of 28/29th October, a great turnout from both visitors and our own club. The conditions could not have been more different on the two days! Saturday brought the forecast very strong winds,. blowing 20 knots from the Southwest down the length of the lake.

With an excellent turnout of 24 entrants for the Masters Championship and 11 entrants for the Youth Championship, some sailors were a little distracted during the initial briefing as one boat had already ventured out to test Budworth Mere and found the big gusts with severe wind shifts pretty hard going – leading to a couple of capsizes! This certainly gave a few of the sailors pause for thought!

Nonetheless, sailors from Gold Silver and Bronze ventured out, and only a few managed to complete the two races without one (or more!) capsizes. Even the hot-shots took a bath – the difference being that they recovered quickly and sailed back up the fleet!

The PRO Jon Chapman set some good courses on both days with a couple of good beats, runs and a nice reach to end the lap. Two races were completed for both Youth and Masters – the planned 3rd Youth race was held over to the next morning.

The evening brought a well deserved rest for those who had sailed, and all enjoyed the excellent evening meal and entertainment from “Elephant Juice”.

Sunday morning brought sunshine and light winds from the North (mostly!), so different sailing skills were needed! Some big changes in both wind strength and direction saw considerable place changing throughout the fleet, with some gaining/losing 6 places on a single leg!

After racing was complete the bar was open and the final prize giving (slightly delayed by a Youth protect hearing)  also included thanks to the Race officers and team, plus the galley and catering team, who had all worked hard through the weekend – not forgetting our illustrious Commodore (and spouse) who worked tirelessly throughout the weekend to ensure all ran smoothly.

Crewing Opportunities 2018

Like to Crew in a Snipe?

There are a few helms wanting a crew for the 2018 season.

Successful Helm and crew combinations depend upon availability, ability,  personality and is especially daunting if you are new to the club and don’t know who would be good to consider. Read on……..

What does a Helm look for in a potential crew: race winner, someone to teach how to helm or crew, to encourage into the sport, a specific weight or ability, just be a regular down at the club, travel to occasional events with no cost or shared cost, just a chatty person who likes to get out on the water, the occasional sail on specific days or a regular slot through most of the year? I may have missed out a variable or two.

What does a Crew look for: The mirror of the above.

It can be tricky to find a helm to sail with, there is always the worry that there is discomfort in asking in case they don’t know how to say “yes please” or “no”, their crew may be upset too !

As Snipe Captain I am pretty familiar with those who are looking for a crew now and for next season, so by getting in touch with me we can discuss what you want and who would be a good fit for you.

If you would rather crew in a GP or RS200 then get in touch with the class captain if those fleet, you will find them keen to help.

Great turnout yesterday for the Budworth Solo Open event, with 22 boats competing. Weather conditions rather indifferent, but all 22 sailed the 2 races out of three (Race 3 abandoned).

Well done all, and thanks to the Race management PRO/ARO, the Rescue and Galley teams.

Full Results are on our Racing/Results page.
