Last Saturday, 25th June, the club organized a Six Hour Endurance Event & Social to encourage club sailors of all abilities to join TEAM Budworth at this year’s 50th 24Hr West Lanc’s Endurance event.

Some near perfect sailing conditions greeted the thirty plus sailors who gathered on the front lawn at 10am to be briefed on the circular course around the outside of all the marks of the mere (bar E & F) to best mimic the race track on Southport marine lake.

In glorious sunshine each of the five evenly matched teams of six sailors started on the gun at 11am and sailed for two laps of the course taking just over twenty minutes before a compulsory changeover on the Snipe jetty.
This fun participation event was meticulously scrutinised by the scorers Marie Guess and Linda Smith and with appropriate penalties being imposed by Mike Guess and John Smith on any boat that looked inappropriately getting too far ahead.

As the finishing gun sounded on the dot of 5pm all that was left to say was a big thank you to all of the competitors, team captains, scores, race officials for a great day’s fun event.

If you have been inspired to come and join TEAM Budworth at this year’s 24Hr event please contact Bill Kenyon Email: captwednight@budworthsc.org.uk

Budworth Laser Open Event – 3rd July 2016

The Laser open at Budworth attracted an excellent turn-out in great conditions. The wind was variable but offered opportunity for big gains and losses when you least expected them.

Congratulations to Charlotte Greenhalgh from LLSC who won with a string of 3 bullets, with George Graham from Burwain in second and Ross Crook heading up the Budworth entries in third.

Photos from the Laser Open can be found at Peter Cull’s website

Team Racing at Budworth, March 2016

Budworth Sailing Club’s Annual Random Pairs Team Racing event takes place this Saturday in the club’s team racing Firefly’s.
The event is open to all club members. There will be briefing at 10:30 with the first race at 11:00.
To indicate that you wish to sail please enter via Webcollect.
The Random Pairs event is a four-boat team-racing event, but people only enter as a “boat” (helm and crew). In each race, a boat is paired with another boat for that race only. They then race against another two boats. For the next race the combinations are all swapped round – hence the “Random” part of Random Pairs.
This is an excellent opportunity to experience team racing – it doesn’t matter how new to team racing you are, as you will sail with lots of different teams. It is also an excellent opportunity for parent child combinations to enter.
If anyone is short of a crew fret not – we will either get people to jump in with you or we may have some juniors wanting to crew.

GP14 Budworth Open 2016 – Report

An excellent event at Budworth this year, with a good turnout from Budworth sailors and visitors alike. We were pleased to welcome a strong contingent from Bolton, as well as WLYC and other clubs in the North West.
In marked contrast to last years’ force 4-6 wind, we were both blessed and cursed by the weather this year. On th eplus side it was a lovely warm and sunny day, so sun-cream was the order of the day. However the light and fickle wind gave the Race Officers pause for thought and a delay to the first race.

However a sensible course and good management meant that all three races were completed, and an excellent and good humoured day was enjoyed by all.

On the first race over-enthusiasm from several boats resulted in a recall, but then the fleet got away, and quickly found that a lot of ground could be easily gained or lost, depending on the wind puffs and shifts. The meant that some windward boats suddenly became becalmed and then ended to leeward of those approaching behind!
The leaders pulled away and clearer air stretched the fleet out.

After a good lunch races 2 and 3 were completed successfully. The conditions remained “bright and light”, so there was everything to play for as positions could change quite dramatically!

prize-givingBudworth ‘s Nick Devereux with crew Sam Platt were first in the gold fleet,

Chris & Ejay first in the silver,

and Peter Guest & Sheila Beavers won the Bronze fleet prize.

We would like to thank all for coming, and especially the visitors who traveled to join us in spite of the light-wind forecast!
